Takahiro Suzuki has been traveling all over the world with writing “IKIRO”.

The Japanese word “IKIRO” consists of a Chinese character “生”and 2 Japanese Hiragana letters. The origin of the letter “生” comes from China more than 3000 years ago. This time Takahiro made an IKIRO installation on the floor with 2 materials. One is the red soil from 53 Museum in China. The other one is white wheat flour from Japan. Both colors stand for the flags of China and Japan. Two materials mixed on the floor and become one installation. Another reason I use these materials is that Guangzhou is famous for food. The IKIRO project documentatary video was on the wall in the room. The day 01 April 2012 was the 15th anniversary for the IKIRO project.

IIKIRO Village / Takahiro Suzuki

http://mura.ikiro.net

April - October 2010 / "Nishinomiya Funasaka Biennale" Hyogo Japan

There was a project called IKIRO Village in Nishinomiya Funasaka Biennale. It ran for 6 months including preparation time. Takahiro got an idea to go back to the roots of creation. He called people to join the project. The members of IKIRO Village increased gradually and became a community. They planted seeds of many kinds of vegetables in the field. They also made plates and cups from local mud. At the end they made “IKIRO Village Café” and saved food with the plates and the cups they made, and the vegetables they grew. In the cafe people wrote sheets of IKIRO and hung them in the room.

IKIRO Project

Takahiro Suzuki is an artist who writes the Japanese word "IKIRO" everyday. "IKIRO" can be translated into "Be Alive" in English. "IKIRO project" is an art project based on his daily writing. Takahiro has been working on the "IKIRO Project" since 01 April 1996 as an art project shown in many places throughout the world, including Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. He writes "IKIRO" throughout his life.

Blink / Takahiro Suzuki

Novel / 72 pages
©Takahiro Suzuki 2012

The heroine is an artist who has an ability to talk to animals and plants. When she was a child, she was an orphan and she had bitter experiences because of this special ability. She felt isolation in her life and she was not good at communicating with people, but found pleasure to live honestly little by little. What is the meaning of living? Why do some people die suddenly? This is a novel to reconsider such questions. Takahiro wrote this novel after the East Japan earthquake / East Japan disaster of March 11 2011.

Water in the Desert / Takahiro Suzuki

Video work / 95 minutes
Filmed : 2003 / Sahara desert in Morocco,
Takuramakan desert in China. Japan, etc.
©Takahiro Suzuki 2004

This is a video work of Takahiro. The story is about a person in the desert. It is very hot and dry so he is very thirsty. He has reached the last water in his bottle. It is necessary to live and it is also last hope for him because he doesn't know if he can meet someone or if there is anything on his way. The theme is what is the meaning to live. Can you say if such a person who is totally isolated in the desert still exists as a human being?

IKIRO to IKIRO / Takahiro Suzuki

Video of IKIRO Project / 32 minutes
Filmed : 2001 / Otterlo, the Netherlands
©Takahiro Suzuki 2002

This is a documentary video of IKIRO Project based on Takahiro Suzuki's performance at Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands in 2001. Takahiro stayed outside surrounded by nature and constantly wrote IKIRO for 5 months as a part of a Japanese exhibition.  He also made a potato field next to his desk to think about the basic idea of creation. He found similarities between writing IKIRO and planting potatoes. It was also a homage to the painting "Potato eater" by Vincent Van Gogh in the museum. He filmed conversations with many kinds of visitors sometimes and made this documentary video.
