"IKIRO-DON" - Tokyo, Japan

27 September - 10 October 1999 / "Gaw Part.1" at Shinjuku Golden Street , Tokyo, Japan
Red Flag, Rice, Japanese pickle-Ume

Once upon a time in 1999, there is a back street called Golden Street in Shinjuku Tokyo. This was the place where many artists used to frequent for drinks and friendly gatherings especially during the1960s and 70s. However time passed by and people forgot all about this.
One bartender, who worked in the alley, had an idea of re-bringing the area to life and IKIRO was invited for such events. Takahiro, considering the streetfs unique history and character, wanted to use a different medium than usual painting or paper works, but instead a red menu flag that read eIKIRO DONf.
Intrigued by its unusual name eIKIRO DONf, people started to ask what this food had inside at its cheap price of $1, then again only to find a Japanese pickle on top of a bowl of rice. Soon this became an interesting story around town and IKIRO DON became a real fixed menu. It was not the food content that mattered but the simple name eIKIROf that made people think and talk about life.
